PRODUCTION PROCESS
Money | Facility | Talent | Networks | Profit

Introduction:
Producing a limited TV series starts as an idea and goes through careful planning until it's aired. Balancing creativity and business is key, with financial interests protected by a completion guarantor. This guarantees the show is finished on time or investors get their money back.

Acquisition and Development:
The longest phase involves acquiring rights, polishing the script, and securing financing. The script is refined with input from the producer and director. Once complete, the package, including the script and key talent, is presented to potential investors for a green light.

Securing Financing:
Productions reduce risk through several funding methods:

  • Soft Money: Government grants and tax credits for filming in specific regions.
  •
  • Private Investment: Attracts accredited investors.
  •
  • Pre-Sales: Selling distribution rights before filming.
  •
  • Deferments: Delaying payment to key people until after release.
  •
  • Gap Loans: Filling budget shortfalls with loans secured by unsold distribution rights.

Pre-Production and Production:
Once financing is secured, the project moves to pre-production, where the script is broken down and a production crew hired. Filming follows the script with the director overseeing the creative process. Production time varies but typically lasts 8-12 months.

Post-Production:
Editing starts as soon as filming begins, and once shooting wraps, the final cut is refined with the director, producer, and network. Visual effects, sound, and music are added before the final version is approved.

Networks:
Networks play a key role in marketing and distributing the series worldwide. They handle promotion and ensure the series reaches its target audience through TV or streaming services.

Home Entertainment:
Revenue comes from streaming, downloads, DVD, Blu-Ray.

Ancillary Rights:
Additional income can come from merchandising and selling rights to airlines or other platforms.
